2011 Parish Pastor of the Year
The Academy of Parish Clergy is pleased to honor the Rev. Dr. Lawrence Corbett as the 2011 Parish Pastor of the Year. The award was given at the Academy's Annual Conference, held February 15-17, 2011 at Canterbury Retreat and Conference Center in Oviedo, Florida.
Corbett is Senior Pastor of Central Union Church, United Church of Christ, in Honolulu, Hawaii. In his three years at Central Union Church, Corbett has led this historic 1,600 member church in forging a new identity, and developing new ministries. He came to Central Union Church after founding Pinnacle Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1989 – a congregation that grew to 1,300 members under Corbett's leadership. Parent to two adopted African American bi-racial children with his wife Meredith, racial reconciliation is one of Corbett's passions in ministry.
The selection criteria for the Parish Pastor of the Year involves four areas: faithfulness, leadership, personal qualities, and ministry of the pastor's congregation. Congregation size, location, and denominational affiliation are not factors in the selection. Nominations and references for Parish Pastor of the Year candidates are submitted by congregants, staff, and judicatory leadership.
